Video Thumbnails
Extract video frames by count or time interval, then download JPG images, a ZIP, or a contact sheet. Videos and images stay in your browser.
How to use
Extract video frames by count or time interval, then download JPG images, a ZIP, or a contact sheet. Videos and images stay in your browser.
Steps
- Choose or drop one local video and wait for its duration and dimensions to load. The video is never uploaded.
- Count mode defaults to 10 images, with 20 and 30 available. It divides the video evenly and samples the midpoint of each segment. Interval mode supports seconds or minutes and defaults to every 10 seconds, starting at 0.
- Choose High, Medium, or Low quality, with Medium selected by default. Maximum edges are 1280, 800, and 480 pixels respectively, keeping the aspect ratio without upscaling. Check the estimated count, then generate. View progress or cancel as needed.
- Results appear in time order and are all selected by default. Select individual images, all images, or none. Timestamps are on by default and apply to previews and every export without extracting frames again.
- In image mode, download one image or a ZIP of selected images. Enable Contact sheet to export only a sheet, using 5 columns by default or 1–10 columns. Switching modes or column counts keeps results. Check actual dimensions before exporting.
Supported formats
Choose one video that your browser can decode and export JPG images. Image mode offers individual downloads and a ZIP of selected images; contact sheet mode combines selected images into one JPG.
Files and privacy
Video reading, frame extraction, timestamp drawing, ZIP packaging, and contact sheet creation all run locally in your current browser. Videos and images are never uploaded. Replacing the file or leaving the page cancels tasks and releases media and temporary image URLs.
Limitations
- Process one video at a time. Compatibility depends on your browser’s support for the video container and codec. Convert unreadable or damaged files in other software first.
- Generate up to 300 images per task. Interval times are strictly earlier than the video duration. If the estimated count exceeds the limit, increase the interval or switch to count mode.
- Compressed result images are limited to 128 MiB in total. If this limit or device memory is exceeded, reduce the count, increase the interval, or lower quality. Large videos and many results take longer; keep the page open.
- Contact sheets follow time order from left to right and top to bottom, preserving the original aspect ratio. Sheets are limited to 4096 pixels per edge and 12 million pixels in total. Larger sheets are scaled down proportionally, and actual export dimensions are shown.
- Changing the sampling mode, count, interval, or quality clears old results and requires regeneration. Changing timestamps, export mode, columns, or selected images keeps the extracted thumbnails.
- Canceling generation keeps completed thumbnails available for selection and export. Follow error messages if reading, extraction, or encoding fails. Use your system browser if downloads are restricted in a mobile or in-app browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do count and interval modes differ?
Count mode divides the video into 10, 20, or 30 segments and samples each midpoint for a quick overview. Interval mode starts at 0 and extracts frames at the chosen second or minute interval, excluding the end of the video.
Do I need to regenerate to turn timestamps off?
No. Timestamps are independent of frame extraction. The switch immediately applies to thumbnail previews, individual JPG files, images inside a ZIP, and contact sheets.
Can I export a contact sheet and a ZIP together?
These are separate export modes. Image mode offers individual images and a ZIP of selected images. Contact sheet mode only offers the sheet. Switching modes preserves existing thumbnails, and sheets include only selected images.
Why is my contact sheet smaller than expected?
To control memory and canvas size, sheets exceeding 4096 pixels per edge or 12 million pixels in total are scaled down proportionally. Preview and export use the same layout, and actual dimensions are shown before export.
Can I export after generation is canceled or fails?
Yes. Completed thumbnails remain available for selection and export. Adjust the count, interval, or quality and retry if needed; changing these sampling settings clears old results.
